The Maize Recreation Commission and Maize Performing Arts and Aquatics Center have partnered to bring indoor swimming lessons to USD 266 and surrounding communities. Lessons will be taught using the Learn-to-Swim curriculum, providing school aged children and young teens with positive and developmentally appropriate aquatic learning experiences.
Learn-to-Swim consists of 6 levels and we will be offering levels 1-5. Please place your child in the level that most appropriately fits your child's skill level and age. Participants will be evaluated and moved according to their skill level the first week of lessons, if needed.
Level 1: Ages 4-5
Designed to orient participants to the aquatic environment, basic skills, and water safety.
Level 2: Ages 5-7
Builds on basic aquatic skills & water safety. Participants begin to perform at a more advanced level on both front/back and locomotion skills. Participants will be able to touch bottom of pool.
Level 3: Ages 7-9
Builds on skills in Levels 1 & 2. Will learn front crawl/back stroke and are introduced to treading water and under water swimming. Time will increase for treading water. Participants may not be able to touch the bottom of the pool in this level.
Level 4: Ages 9-10
Seeks to improve proficiency in performing the swimming strokes introduced in Level 3 increasing distances. In addition, participants will learn arm actions that accompany scissor kick and breaststroke kick to begin performing sidestroke and breaststroke. Participants will learn the rules for head-first entry. Class is held in the lap pool where the water temperature is cooler and participants will not be able to touch.
Level 5: Ages 10+
Focus is on helping participants refine their performance of all six swimming strokes. Participants will also learn to perform flip turns front and back. Class is held in the lap pool where the water temperature is cooler and participants will not be able to touch.

*Fun Factory participants must sign up for the 11:00 a.m. time slot for transportation to and from swimming lessons to be included in their Fun Factory schedule.
